Tips for Reducing Teething Pain & Giveaway

Oh no!! Its starting, the red cheeks, the lumpy gums, the pulling at the ears and the sore bottom. Its official Kipper is teething and he’s grumpy! From memory Monkey got his first tooth at around six months so we could still have a while until we see those little white tomb stones starting to appear.

Although he’s waking earlier thankfully we haven’t experienced the sleepless nights yet but, now I have said that I bet its coming! So as parents what can we do to help?

  • Distraction – this is by far the most common technique I have been using with Kipper. Normally if I pick him up and walk around the room, look out the windows or if possible go outside this will normally calm him and take his mind off his teeth. Or I run him a bath, he loves to float add in a some bubbles and if Monkey’s at school he gets some time to do that alone without being prodded every few seconds!
  • The amount of dribble always amazes me, we have been known to go through three dribble bibs in one morning alone. However I wouldn’t be without them now the weather is starting to cool down. The last thing I need is him catching a cold because his clothes are constantly damp. I do try to wipe his face with a soft muslin so that the dribble doesn’t create a rash around his mouth and on his chin.
  • He loves to chew my fingers – so when I can as long as I have clean fingers I often run them over his gums. Although there are no sharp bits yet I can definitely feel the lumps of his teeth. He will quite happily try and take a bite out of me, at swimming last week he left a red bruise on my shoulder which resembled a hicky!
  • I find that he is breast feeding more at the moment and he will often use feeding to help him drop off to sleep. I remember Monkey doing the same thing and although I don’t want him to become dependent on me to sleep, when he’s clearly in pain then I want him to find comfort. All I am saying is thank goodness for nipple cream!
  • If Kipper’s temperature spikes or similar then I would medicate but wherever possible I rely on natural remedies such as teething crystals. They are predominately made of camomile, although getting powder into a little one can be difficult. Sometimes just making his dummy wet and dipping it into the crystals can help.
  • Teething Rings and Toys – everything Kipper can hold will end up in his mouth. Thankfully many of the the things he has, or that you can buy for this age group are safe or include something which is chewable.

Things I have not needed to try yet but will:

  • Frozen dummy – its possible to get a dummy to take in water but submerging it
  • Once I start weaning I will look to give him cooled foods such as cucumber and carrots to chew on. I will also look into making teething biscuits and teething pops.
  • I am also hoping to read up on facial massage

Recently I have also been looking at teething jewellery, because quite frankly I don’t want to be covered in hickys, and I like my clothes dry and face not bitten. Although I do love him dearly!

Gumigem contacted me some time ago to try out some of their jewellery and to date I have been very impressed with them.

‘We only use the highest quality medical grade silicone, it is a natural element and ecofriendly, as well as being washable. Most importantly it is tested post production to ensure there are no nasty’s, so, no BPA, no lead, no latex or phthalates.’
